"... And we are being conservative!"

There are many reasons to love the private equity and venture capital space.

Leading innovations, engaging CEO's and stubborn inventors will always make our roles more interesting.

One part I always enjoy is when the financial projections are revealed in all their glory. It can seem as though the Entrepreneur or Business Owner is spending 80% of their time focused on the revenue calculations and only 20% on the expenses.

The result of this focus is the creation of the proverbial 'hockey stick' projections. It is like looking outside and seeing nothing but blue sky.

Often when we meet with business owners, they will draw reference to their financial projections. My favourite part of this, is when they have finished going through the numbers... they look at you and the words "... And we are being conservative" come rolling of the tongue. Not a blinking eye can be seen!

So, if you are a CEO or a founder and reading this blog, be assured that we did this too, when starting Wholesale Investor. Whilst not quite being a hockey stick... our optimistic spirit took over our realistic brains.

If you are a private or professional investor, I am sure you wish there was some way to monetise this statement.

GlassesOnline sees opportunity grow in slowing economy

Online optical retailer GlassesOnline is set to benefit from the tightening economy as consumers seek out value for money purchases, particularly on essentials.
With the average pair of prescription glasses now costing over $300, GlassesOnline provide the same glasses, complete with the same frames and lenses for as little as $65. And for the 11 million Australians who spend over $1bn on their glasses annually, the savings are huge.

Kevin Reece, Managing Director of GlassesOnline, says the large price differential is also having a big impact on the buying behaviour of glasses wearers.

“The high price of glasses in retail stores acts as a disincentive to purchase, discouraging the buying of multiple pairs and the timely updating of glasses when prescriptions change. By using the internet to remove the cost barriers, people are now able to buy glasses when they need them and can pick up spare pairs, different pairs for different occasions and prescription sunnies without having to worry about the cost.”

GlassesOnline’s innovative business model has been featured in the media including Today Tonight, A Current Affair, Australian Financial Review, BRW and MyBusiness magazine. And the next step for GlassesOnline is raising investment capital to grow the business and reach more customers.

“We’ve grown predominantly through word of mouth and have done relatively little marketing to date. It’s an exciting time as we now have a great opportunity to take our model to a larger audience, increase our product range and scale the business. We’re probably in the minority of businesses that will benefit from the economic slowdown.” says Reece.

Sydney, 15 September, 2008 – 3eep, a provider of social media services for sports coaches, players and administrators has today announced the appointment of Simon Baker, former Managing Director of the REA Group/realestate.com.au Ltd, to its board of Directors.

In his role of Director, Baker will provide valuable insight to support 3eep's growth ambitions, aimed at reaching local sporting communities globally through its SportsPassion brand and through a range of distribution partnerships.

Rob Antulov, CEO of 3eep, says Baker's addition to the 3eep board is a coup. "Simon's experience managing rapid growth and international expansion of an online business is well known. "The team at 3eep has identified a globally-relevant business model which marries the needs of local sports participants who want to better manage their teams and connect with each other, with innovative new web technology, and, importantly, with advertisers' desire to reach into these active local communities. This is an exciting combination to bring together in one online space."

Baker is an experienced early stage investor, and also serves as the current Executive Chairman of Artshub and as a Director at RedBubble. He holds a Bachelor of Computer Science from Monash University and a Master of Business Administration from Melbourne Business School.

Wholesale Investor Launch

Sydney, NSW (PRWEB) October 1, 2008 -- As the public markets continue to falter, IPO's have all but ceased, and small cap ASX listed companies struggle to maintain their share price and liquidity. Investor money is seeking alternative investment options that represent more stability and strong growth for the future.

Private Equity and Venture Capital in Australia

One of those sectors is private equity. In Australia, this is a large but somewhat un-noticed market that offers good potential for investors. According to there are approximately 300 private equity and venture capital firms in Australia managing over $25 billion of investor funds

According to the 12th Annual World Wealth Report by Merrill Lynch/Capgemini, there are 172,000 High-Net Worth individuals in Australia, some of whom may seek to back private ventures. The amount of money available for private ventures could be as high as $50 billion.

Private Equity Benefits

Investing into private companies offers investors more stability as the value of their investments is not affected by volatile and sometimes irrational share price fluctuations. Private companies are under less scrutiny and there are far less regulatory costs and requirements than their listed counterparts - allowing management to focus on driving growth, making acquisitions and delivering profits.

The downside of private equity investing is the lack of communication between companies seeking capital, and the money - namely private equity/venture capital funds, high net worth, wholesale and angel investors. "Most private deals whether they are trade sales or capital raisings are completed through closed networks, meaning opportunities are missed", says Steve Torso

Wholesale Investor

This month, a new magazine and website called has been launched in Australia by founder and former publisher of Wealth Creator Magazine, Reuben Buchanan and business partner Steve Torso.

"Wholesale Investor aims to closes the gap between investors and companies who seek capital", says Buchanan.

"Wholesale Investor works by simply listing companies, who are seeking capital or to be acquired in the magazine and online. We publish the key information investors seeks. The magazine is then sent directly to our database of investors. Our aim is to improve the visibility of the opportunities, to improve efficiency in the private space" says Steve Torso.

"The investor database consists of several thousand wholesale, high net worth, institutional investors, ASX listed companies as well as the entire private equity and venture capital industry". Private equity can be used for many purposes in today's market. From providing growth capital, repaying bank debt or providing existing shareholders with a partial or full exit

Wholesale Investor aims to introduce hundreds of private deals to their investor database each year through the magazine and website, providing the industry with a central portal to view these private opportunities.
